Better be, at any rate, cos it applies to me too (hello, fellow scorpion!).

That said, you described my feelings exactly when it comes to revisions and editing: "How easy it would be to start a new project, with all the freedom and wantonness it entails. Got a logical, compelling plot? Ah, I’ll work on that during revisions! All those repetitious scenes, the overwriting, the half-baked characters, the tangled morass of dialogue? I’ll fix it later!"

So dangerous to think like that, and the only way I could stop that train of thought was to do my editing in chunks. At least if I could fix certain scenes, I wouldn't have to look at the entire MS, crying out "I suck!". Eventually, suddenly, I found myself with a complete, edited book. And then came the glorious freedom of starting the enxt one. Er, not counting the whole agent-hunting process, of course.

I haven't dropped a project in a while. I suppose as long as the idea is still interesting, then it's worth pursuing. But if, thinking through the story, the plot sounds cliched and the characters trail off into predictable ends, then I guess it's time to drop it. It's happened to me a couple of times in the pat, but thankfully I realised it before I'd written too much of the story.Deniz Bevanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17134553551048836979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2274987097756433491.post-12305522368365092672010-02-01T04:05:29.118-06:002010-02-01T04:05:29.118-06:00Kristen - Ah, I like your thinking! In fact, I think you misinterpreted the thing altogether; the project in question was NOT your book but that pile of laundry you have growing in your house. Ignore it at once and get back to writing, young lady! *wg*Kristen Callihanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01448274676402616525noreply@blogger.com
