A Very Booky Christmas

Eleven days until Christmas.

Usually those words would strike fear into my heart, as I am notorious for leaving my gift buying to the last minute. This year, however, and for reasons I am presently unable to fathom, I was all done with the Christmas shopping over a week ago. In fact, I'm so organsied I've even wrapped all bar a smattering of said gifts. I don't know what's possessed me; but whatever it is, I'm quietly accepting it and hoping it calls again next year.

Books formed a large part of my Christmas shopping list, for my kids in particular. There's something just so wonderful about giving books to children, and making an appearance beneath our tree this Christmas morning will be:

Terry Pratchett's Wee Free Men
Steampunk! anthology edited by Kelly Link and Gavin J Grant
2012 Guiness World Records
Various Horrible Histories - Vicious Vikings, Measly Middle Ages, Groovy Greeks, Rotten Romans - by Terry Deary
Slinky Malinki's Christmas Crackers by Lynley Dodd
Legend by Marie Lu

And a little birdy tells me Santa might just be bringing me The House of Silk, by Anthony Horowitz. I'm rubbing my hands together in anticipation of that one!

Have you bought any books to give as gifts this Christmas? Which ones did you buy, and who did you buy them for? Do share, because as organised as I am, I'll always make time - and room on the credit card - to buy more books. :-)

  1. Books! My Favorite gift ~ to give and receive!

The Help,(For Me) by Kathryn Stockett tops my list this year. Haven't read it yet, but really want to. Having to hold myself back from seeing the movie first!

This I Believe, Life Lessons, (Me,again) by Dan and Mary Jo Gediman (my cousin!). The latest in the This I Believe series. Wonderful ideas, shared by many (linked on my blog).

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver. (For a friend) Awesome ideas. Awesome story.

Reviving Ophelia, Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher, Ph.D. (For my cousin, who has a young daughter) A MUST READ for anyone raising a little girl.

Nothing very new on my lists this year. But, still awesome! Thanks for the suggestions.

  2. Scarlett - ooh, The Help! Yes, I've been wanting to read this, too. Hmm ... if I buy it for my mother, I'm sure she'd lend it to me when she's done ... (evil grin). The rest of your selections sound great, especially your cousin's books. I'll have to check them out.

    Thanks for sharing! :-)

  4. That's a great list Rachel - the first two books are on my wishlist.
Hmm, what books did I get people? I got DH the new Stephen King. And last week I got myself Simon Tolkien's second book (English courtroom drama!) and Barbara Rogan's Rowing in Eden - does that count?

  5. @ Gerardine - Wow, you've got quite a list there, and so varied. And The Phantom Tollboth, yes! I reckon Child #2 and Child #3 would get a real kick out of that ... adding it to the list!

@ Deniz - yes, they count. :-) I totally forgot about King's latest, 11/22/63. I think Santa might need to bring me that. :-P
